Product Safety in Online Trade: A Global Challenge and New Solutions

8 September 2026 16:42 5131 Print

Amid the rapid development of digital commerce, purchasing products is becoming increasingly easy for consumers. But to what extent are product safety, reliability, and lawful circulation in the market equally guaranteed?

According to data from UNCTAD and Consumers International, approximately 44% of countries worldwide do not have legislation that provides consumers with adequate protection against risks related to product safety.

Even more concerning is that, according to OECD data, 87% of recalled or banned products continue to be offered for sale on online platforms.

These figures are not merely statistics. They demonstrate that in the digital marketplace, government oversight alone is not sufficient to ensure product safety. Even when a product is banned in one country, it can easily be offered online to consumers in another jurisdiction.

From this perspective, product safety is no longer solely a matter of consumer protection. It is directly connected to issues such as:

  • platform responsibility in cross-border e-commerce;
  • rapid identification and removal of dangerous products from sale;
  • strengthening information exchange between countries;
  • providing consumers with reliable information about product-related risks.

From an analytical perspective, the sustainable development of the digital market should be assessed not only by the growth of trade volumes, but also by its ability to ensure that consumers can make safe and informed choices.
